Description
Introducing the Boondocker D2 – a whole new level of sound and playability!
The Boondocker D2 is a 3-course, 4-string acoustic walking dulcimer (or “dulcitar”) designed for anyone to play, from beginners to pros. Like the original, it’s typically tuned to D-A-D and can easily be played using tabs for the traditional Appalachian mountain dulcimer, but played like a guitar. The diatonic fretboard and open tuning ensure that every note you hit is musical.
New and Improved Features:
- Deeper body for enhanced resonance and greater volume, giving the D2 a richer, fuller sound.
- Thinner neck for improved playability and comfort, making it even easier to handle for all playing styles.
- Separate string holes for melody strings, allowing for quicker and more efficient string changes.
- The electric/acoustic version now comes with a passive tone control knob, providing greater control over the tone, so you can dial in the perfect sound whether you’re playing acoustically or plugged in.
The Maple and Spruce model is beautifully crafted from solid maple with a 1/8″ spruce top, featuring our signature Henna-inspired design. The Katalox bridge and Corian saddle contribute to the instrument’s clear, powerful sound that’s perfect for playing alongside acoustic guitars, cajons, and other instruments. It’s finished with multiple coats of lacquer for durability and a stunning sheen.
Lightweight and easy to transport, the Boondocker D2 is perfect for taking to the beach, the woods, your backyard, or simply jamming at home. Whether acoustic or electric, the sound is loud, vibrant, and sure to impress.
Each Boondocker D2 comes complete with a pick, ready for you to start making music wherever inspiration strikes!

In my humble opinion, the new D-2 with the Celtic henna pattern is just superb! I love it. I really like the slightly deeper body than the original Boondocker, it sounds somewhat richer now. The thinner neck is very nice too, although the playability of both models are equally superb. This is a quality instrument that is so much fun and such a joy to play.

This dulcimer is a very solid great quality instrument. You can tell it’s hand made because it has a few minor imperfections. Don’t get that twisted – I am referring to things that give the dulcimer I received character and charm. I loved it so much that I am actually ordering a custom chromatic version of the same dulcimer I received. Just to give some context – I own a couple seagull Merlin’s I have a D tuned Spruce and a G tuned Mahogany – both have been great little instruments – but I was looking for something that was “a little more” a bit better build, a bit better sound, and also with a built in pickup (microphone since it is an acoustic) . I also owned a Roosebeck Stick dulcimer, which was a pretty nice instrument – but tuning it was difficult because it used wooden peg tuners, also the body sounded muffled, even though it had probably my favorite neck.
The boondocker is a great instrument because it has a larger body (more / richer sound), the action is very good (like the Merlin), there is an extra fret giving you 3 more notes on the stock unit. The tuners are very good mechanical tuners – one feature I REALLY appreciate is that there are 4 string holes – which of the dulcimers I have owned 3 have had you thread 2 strings through one hold for your high D/G. Another thing I appreciated was that the unit comes with a chord chart. As a musician with years of experience playing stringed instruments, you can quickly find your way around the dulcimer, but for folks just getting started – it can be a pain looking up chords on the internet or having to order a chord chart. All the little touches, plus having talked to Patrick (the gent who actually made my dulcimer) gave me a great feeling about buying from and supporting this company. In short I love my Boondocker and would recommend it to anyone looking for a beautifully constructed instrument that is proudly made in America from quality components! If you want to see my review and a demo of my unit, check out my youtube channel on July 6th the video will be available.

I love my new Jaromin! It sounds great! The design was gorgeous! But it snagged my long polyester sleeve. I contacted them online and they guided me on what to do. It was a simple fix. It was so nice to be able to reach out so easily and get help. I really appreciate them! This is my fourth instrument. I have three dulcimers and one Elite Baritone Ukulele, which I am thoroughly enjoying.

I absolutely love my Boondocker D-2! I’ve wanted one of these dulcimers for ages. The finish, materials and henna design are so pretty and overall it’s VERY well made. I already had a couple other stick dulcimers and a mountain dulcimer that my daddy had since the 70s. But after I saw Bing Futch playing one I was pretty much sold. My manager surprised me with this about a week ago and I haven’t put it down. The sound is great and just so resonant. I love this extra fret at the base and the thinner neck is a stellar choice for my tiny hands. I can’t wait to play it on the promo tour for my album! Jaromin for the WIN!!!
