Boondocker Classic vs D2: Enhanced Features & Sound

At Jaromin Guitars, we’re always looking for ways to improve our instruments and bring new innovations to our customers. The Boondocker has been a beloved staple for players of all skill levels, offering an accessible, fun, and versatile way to enjoy music. Now, we’re excited to introduce the Boondocker D2 – an evolutionary step forward designed to build on the features that make the original great while offering enhanced playability, tone, and versatility.

In this post, we’ll explore the key differences between the two models, why the D2 was created, and how these upgrades can improve your playing experience.

The Classic Boondocker: Timeless Design, Instant Playability

When we first launched the Boondocker, our goal was simple: to create a 3-course, 4-string acoustic dulcimer guitar (or “dulcitar”) that anyone could play. The classic Boondocker is tuned to D-A-D and features a diatonic fretboard, making it easy to pick up, learn, and start playing without worrying about hitting wrong notes. Its compact size, solid maple body, and bright, resonant tone made it an ideal choice for new musicians and experienced players alike.

What Makes the Classic Great:

      • Instant playability thanks to the diatonic fretboard and open tuning.

      • Portable, lightweight design perfect for on-the-go music making.

      • Clear, bright sound that blends beautifully with other acoustic instruments.

Enter the Boondocker D2: Evolving for Even Greater Sound and Comfort

As much as we love the classic Boondocker, we also knew there was room to innovate and improve. The Boondocker D2 takes everything you love about the original and enhances it for an even richer musical experience.

Key Improvements in the Boondocker D2:

        • Deeper Body for Enhanced Resonance and Volume: The D2’s deeper body provides a fuller, richer sound with more projection. Whether you’re playing unplugged or amplified, you’ll notice an increased depth to the tone, making it perfect for both solo playing and ensemble settings.

        • Thinner Neck for Comfort and Playability: With a thinner neck profile, the D2 offers more comfortable playability, especially for longer sessions. This small tweak makes a big difference in how the instrument feels in your hands.

        • Separate String Holes for Easier String Changes: We’ve added separate string holes for the melody strings, making string changes quicker and more efficient. This is a subtle but important upgrade that adds convenience, especially for players who perform regularly.

        • Electric Version with Passive Tone Control: The electric/acoustic version of the D2 now includes a passive tone control, giving you greater flexibility in dialing in the perfect sound when plugged into an amplifier or PA system.

These enhancements come together to create an instrument that offers greater control, comfort, and sound quality without compromising the original charm of the Boondocker.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

Both models have their strengths, and the decision comes down to what you’re looking for in your musical journey.

      • If you’re new to the dulcimer or want an easy, portable instrument that’s perfect for jamming and casual play, the classic Boondocker is a great choice.
      • If you’re looking for deeper, richer tone, greater comfort, and more control over your sound – especially in an amplified setting – the Boondocker D2 is the ideal upgrade.

Regardless of which Boondocker you choose, we’re confident you’ll be thrilled with your choice. And if you’re not 100% satisfied for any reason, please let us know and we’ll make it right. We also offer a 30-day return policy on all instruments.
